"The Corporation" nice film...unanswered questions
It was a filmy night a la "The Corporation" yesterday night at Laura's.
The movie was swell and worth its rave ratings, I must say. but methinks its "thesis" begs the question. The birth, growth and development of corporations reflect the process of self-liberation of capital from whatever vestiges of the feudal left in it (save the queen!); with its transcendence (on a global scale that is) of its infancy wrought in primitive accumulation.
It was to be the vehicle of economic imperialism and in its forms as MNCs, TNCs, GIEs, etc, it is undoubtedly the engine room of neo-liberal globalisation.
My beef is this; just as the commentaries of bourgeois economists and intellectual hackers for capital have been doing these past two weeks posing the "meltdown" as a problem of financialisation, the film poses the problem as that of corporatisation. And even at that the corporation is a devil self-posed as (or that could be) a saint (note the halo that is blended with the tail). But the hell that it can't get out of is capitalism itself!
There might be need for a more critical follow-up. I guess the title for that could simply be: Das Kapital
We sure shall overcome...someday, I guess.
